Wix vs Custom Website: Which Is Right for Your Small Business?

Wix is faster and cheaper to launch but slower to load and harder to rank in Google. A custom-coded website costs more up front, but it loads in under a second, scores 90 or higher on Google PageSpeed, and ranks better in local search. Pick Wix if your website is a brochure. Pick custom if your website needs to bring you customers.

What Wix is good at

We are not anti-Wix. It has 200 million users because it is genuinely good at the things it is good at. Before we get into where it falls short, here is what Wix does well.

Speed to launch is the headline. A non-technical owner can have a working Wix site live over a weekend. No developers, no system to learn. The drag-and-drop editor is the cleanest one in the no-code category.

Up-front cost is almost nothing. The free plan works. Even the paid plans start at $17 a month. For a brand-new business that needs something online today, that math is hard to argue with.

The template library is large. Wix has hundreds of industry templates, and the editing tools are good enough that two Wix sites do not have to look like twins.

02

What custom websites are good at

Custom-coded sites win on five things, and each one keeps paying off the longer you own the site.

Speed. A custom site built in plain HTML, CSS, and JavaScript and hosted on a network like Cloudflare Pages usually loads in under one second. A Wix site usually takes three to seven seconds on a phone.

SEO control. You own every meta tag, every block of structured data, every redirect, every robot directive. Wix handles most of these for you, which means it handles them the same generic way for everybody.

Ownership. The site, the domain, and the code are yours. You cannot export a Wix site. If you outgrow Wix, you start over.

No monthly platform fee. A custom site costs nothing per month at the platform level. Hosting a static site on Cloudflare Pages is free. Wix charges $17 to $159 a month, forever.

No lock-in. You can move a custom site to a new host in an hour. Moving off Wix means a rebuild.

03

Speed and SEO: the real performance gap

This is the part that matters most if your business depends on Google for leads. Wix and Squarespace load a heavy JavaScript engine, their own rendering system, and several tracking scripts before your actual page shows up. The result: most live Wix sites we audit score between 45 and 65 on mobile PageSpeed.

Custom-coded static sites usually score 90 or higher on the same test. That gap shows up in two places. First, your visitors do not sit and wait. A page that loads two seconds faster usually converts 10 to 30 percent better, and that adds up across every visitor for every year you own the site. Second, Google uses Core Web Vitals as a direct ranking signal. A slow site does not rank as well as a fast one, all else equal.

If your Wix site is purely a brochure that only ranks for your business name, this gap does not matter. But if you need to rank for searches like 'web design Eagle Idaho' or 'medspa Phoenix' or any search that is not your name, this gap is the difference between getting found and not. Our custom website design service exists to win exactly those searches, because that is where local leads come from.

Wix typical mobile PageSpeed: 45 to 65. Custom-coded typical: 90 to 100.

Wix vs custom for a small business in Boise

The comparison above holds anywhere. But it gets sharper in a real local market, so here is how it plays out for a small business in Boise and the wider Treasure Valley.

Boise is a competitive search market. The city has grown fast, a lot of money has moved in from out of state, and the established agencies have had five to ten years to pile up backlinks and rankings. For a Boise plumber, dentist, contractor, or law firm, ranking for 'plumber Boise' or 'family dentist Boise' is not a brochure-site job. It is a real contest against businesses with a head start.

That is exactly where the Wix speed penalty hurts most. When ten local competitors are all chasing the same search, Google's tie-breakers decide the order, and Core Web Vitals is one of them. A Wix site scoring 50 on mobile is handing a small ranking edge to every competitor on a fast custom site. In a thin market, that might not change anything. In Boise, it can be the difference between page one and page three.

There is a second Boise factor: the buyer. Treasure Valley customers for higher-priced local services tend to be older and tend to use Google over social apps. They search, they compare two or three sites, and a site that takes five seconds to load on a phone loses them before the page even appears. For a Boise business that lives on local leads, custom is usually the right call. For a Boise business whose site only needs to confirm it exists, Wix is genuinely fine. We build for Boise web design with that exact split in mind, and we will tell a prospect straight when their site is a brochure and Wix would serve them.

05

Total cost over 5 years

Up-front cost favors Wix. Total cost over a few years rarely does. Here is the math for a typical small-business website on the most popular paid plan on each side.

Watch where the lines cross. Wix is cheaper for the first three years and more expensive from year four on, and the gap keeps widening every year after that, because the Wix fee never stops. A custom build is a one-time cost plus a small flat maintenance fee. The Wix plan is rent you pay forever. Over ten years, the difference is not a few hundred dollars. It is several thousand. You can see how a flat one-time price is built on our $5,000 flat pricing page.

YearWix Business Elite ($159/mo)Custom (Aloha) $5,000 + $30/mo maint
Year 1$1,908$5,360
Year 2$3,816$5,720
Year 3$5,724$6,080
Year 4$7,632$6,440
Year 5$9,540$6,800

Lock-in: what happens when you outgrow Wix

Wix's own help docs are direct about this. You cannot export a Wix site. The HTML, CSS, content, structure, and design do not come with you when you leave. You can copy text and download images one at a time, but the actual site does not move.

For most small-business owners, this never comes up. For owners who grow past what Wix supports, like custom checkout flows, multiple languages, region-based pricing, or custom integrations, the rebuild from scratch eats the savings Wix gave them. The real choice is not 'Wix or custom now.' It is 'Wix now and a rebuild later, or custom now and you keep what you build.'

If you are already on Wix and feeling the ceiling, the rebuild is its own project with its own plan. Migrating means recreating the site on a new platform and protecting your search rankings during the move. That is a different job than a fresh build, and we handle it as a website redesign, which includes mapping redirects from the old Wix URLs so you do not lose the rankings you have.

07

When Wix is the right call

Honest answer: there are real cases where Wix is the right tool. We will not pretend otherwise.

  • Brochure-only businesses. The site's only job is to confirm you exist when someone searches your name. SEO does not matter. Speed does not matter. Wix does this fine.
  • Very early stage. You are testing a business idea and may pivot in 6 months. Do not pay for a custom build until you know what you are building for.
  • Hard budget under $1,000. If $1,000 is the absolute ceiling, a Wix paid plan is more honest than a $500 custom build that looks like a $500 custom build.
  • Non-technical owner with no agency relationship. If you need to update the site yourself every day and do not want to learn anything, Wix's editor is the easiest path.

08

When custom is the right call

If any of the points below describes your business, custom is almost certainly the better long-term choice.

  • Lead generation matters. Your business depends on Google searches turning into form submissions and phone calls.
  • SEO matters. You compete for searches that are not your name, like 'plumber in Boise' or 'medspa Scottsdale.'
  • You plan to grow. The site you launch today should still be working in five years.
  • You want predictable cost. A flat-rate custom build with no monthly platform fee is easier to budget than a Wix plan that climbs over time.
  • You care about brand. Templates make small differences look small. A custom design says you take your business seriously.

09

The decision framework (4 questions)

Answer yes to two or more of these and custom is the right call. Answer no to all four and Wix is fine.

  • Will SEO matter to your business in 12 months?
  • Do you expect to outgrow what Wix can do in 3 years?
  • Do you want to own the site, the code, and the domain outright?
  • Do you want a flat predictable cost instead of a recurring monthly fee?

FAQ

Common questions

Is Wix good enough for a small business?
For a brochure-only small business that does not depend on SEO, yes. For a small business that needs Google to bring in customers, no. The performance gap, Wix at 45 to 65 mobile PageSpeed and custom at 90 or higher, shows up in your search rankings over time, and the gap widens as Google leans harder on Core Web Vitals.
Why would I pay for a custom website over Wix?
Three reasons. One, speed, which turns into better conversion and better rankings. Two, ownership, you can move a custom site any time without a rebuild. Three, total cost, custom is cheaper from year four on with most paid Wix plans. The up-front trade is real. The long-term math usually favors custom.
Can a Wix site rank as well as a custom-coded site?
For your business name, yes. For competitive searches that are not your name, usually no. Wix's mobile speed and structural SEO limits make ranking harder, all else equal. Some Wix sites do rank for competitive searches, but they tend to sit on premium domains with strong backlinks, not on Wix's own on-page SEO.
Is Wix or custom better for a Boise small business?
It depends on whether the site needs to rank. Boise is a competitive local search market with established agencies, so a Boise business that depends on local leads usually benefits from a fast custom site. A Boise business whose site is only a brochure to confirm it exists can use Wix without losing much.
Is it hard to migrate off of Wix?
Yes. Wix's own documentation says you cannot export a Wix site. Migrating usually means rebuilding from scratch on the new platform, copying content by hand, and absorbing some lost Google rankings during the move. Plan to migrate before you outgrow Wix, not after.
What about Wix vs Squarespace vs WordPress?
Squarespace and Wix make similar trade-offs: template-driven, hosted, monthly fee, an SEO ceiling. WordPress is more flexible but needs more maintenance. Custom-coded static sites beat all three on speed and SEO, with the trade-off that updates need a developer or a set maintenance plan.
