Wix vs Custom Website: Which Is Right for Your Small Business?

We are not anti-Wix. It has 200 million users because it is genuinely good at the things it is good at. Before we get into where it falls short, here is what Wix does well.

Speed to launch is the headline. A non-technical owner can have a working Wix site live over a weekend. No developers, no system to learn. The drag-and-drop editor is the cleanest one in the no-code category.

Up-front cost is almost nothing. The free plan works. Even the paid plans start at $17 a month. For a brand-new business that needs something online today, that math is hard to argue with.

The template library is large. Wix has hundreds of industry templates, and the editing tools are good enough that two Wix sites do not have to look like twins.

Custom-coded sites win on five things, and each one keeps paying off the longer you own the site.

Speed. A custom site built in plain HTML, CSS, and JavaScript and hosted on a network like Cloudflare Pages usually loads in under one second. A Wix site usually takes three to seven seconds on a phone.

SEO control. You own every meta tag, every block of structured data, every redirect, every robot directive. Wix handles most of these for you, which means it handles them the same generic way for everybody.

Ownership. The site, the domain, and the code are yours. You cannot export a Wix site. If you outgrow Wix, you start over.

No monthly platform fee. A custom site costs nothing per month at the platform level. Hosting a static site on Cloudflare Pages is free. Wix charges $17 to $159 a month, forever.

No lock-in. You can move a custom site to a new host in an hour. Moving off Wix means a rebuild.

This is the part that matters most if your business depends on Google for leads. Wix and Squarespace load a heavy JavaScript engine, their own rendering system, and several tracking scripts before your actual page shows up. The result: most live Wix sites we audit score between 45 and 65 on mobile PageSpeed.

Custom-coded static sites usually score 90 or higher on the same test. That gap shows up in two places. First, your visitors do not sit and wait. A page that loads two seconds faster usually converts 10 to 30 percent better, and that adds up across every visitor for every year you own the site. Second, Google uses Core Web Vitals as a direct ranking signal. A slow site does not rank as well as a fast one, all else equal.

If your Wix site is purely a brochure that only ranks for your business name, this gap does not matter. But if you need to rank for searches like 'web design Eagle Idaho' or 'medspa Phoenix' or any search that is not your name, this gap is the difference between getting found and not. Boise is a competitive search market. The city has grown fast, a lot of money has moved in from out of state, and the established agencies have had five to ten years to pile up backlinks and rankings. A Wix site scoring 50 on mobile is handing a small ranking edge to every competitor on a fast custom site. In a thin market, that might not change anything. There is a second Boise factor: the buyer. Treasure Valley customers for higher-priced local services tend to be older and tend to use Google over social apps. They search, they compare two or three sites, and a site that takes five seconds to load on a phone loses them before the page even appears. Up-front cost favors Wix. Total cost over a few years rarely does. Here is the math for a typical small-business website on the most popular paid plan on each side.

Watch where the lines cross. Wix is cheaper for the first three years and more expensive from year four on, and the gap keeps widening every year after that, because the Wix fee never stops. A custom build is a one-time cost plus a small flat maintenance fee. The Wix plan is rent you pay forever. Over ten years, the difference is not a few hundred dollars. It is several thousand. Wix's own help docs are direct about this. You cannot export a Wix site. The HTML, CSS, content, structure, and design do not come with you when you leave. You can copy text and download images one at a time, but the actual site does not move.

For most small-business owners, this never comes up. For owners who grow past what Wix supports, like custom checkout flows, multiple languages, region-based pricing, or custom integrations, the rebuild from scratch eats the savings Wix gave them. The real choice is not 'Wix or custom now.' It is 'Wix now and a rebuild later, or custom now and you keep what you build.'

If you are already on Wix and feeling the ceiling, the rebuild is its own project with its own plan. Migrating means recreating the site on a new platform and protecting your search rankings during the move.
